Abstract
The aim of this study was to understand the motivations, perceptions and experiences of users of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) in a state capital in southern Brazil. We conducted an exploratory descriptive study with 15 participants from groups with greater susceptibility to HIV infection. The participants were selected using convenience sampling and interviewed until data saturation was reached. The data were organized into three categories: pathways to starting PrEP, including accessibility and information sources; perceptions of the use of PrEP, covering well-being and incentives to promote adherence; and interaction with health professionals and services, highlighting the importance of welcoming and professional training. The findings highlight the need for intersectoral actions to promote health education, combat stigma and expand access to PrEP, with a view to promoting a more inclusive and effective approach to HIV prevention.
