Abstract

Understanding “liberalism” and “collectivism” in occupational therapy can challenge the individual-collective dichotomy to confront the social question.

Objective  To apprehend the collective dimension of occupational therapy professional actions through the perception of professionals from Argentina, Chile, and Colombia.

Methods  27 semi-structured interviews were conducted virtually and discussed through thematic content analysis.

Results  Theories and methodologies for the development of collective actions in occupational therapy were identified.

Conclusion  The collective dimension is contrary to the liberal principle of individualism. The professionals should integrate individualism-collectivism in their practices to approach the macrostructural contradictions. Collectivism may be present from actions with persons, in the clinical context, to community work. The Latin American dialogue might collaborate with the professional approach to the social question, highlighting the collective action.
