Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze the scientific literature on undergraduate courses in public health in Brazil to determine the main research topics and approaches and identify possible gaps in knowledge. Thirty-seven studies were selected and grouped into the following categories: course creation and implementation; professional training; world of work, regulation and professionalization; and professional identity. A series of historical, epistemological, pedagogical, technical and operational aspects indicate concern with and commitment to training. With regard to proposing the creation of courses, the emphasis of the debate was on epistemological and political aspects that have been discussed historically in the field of public health. More than two decades on, other aspects of the debate have emerged, with an urgent concrete need for systematization and positioning, especially when it comes to employment, professionalization and regulation of the profession.
