Abstract
This study investigated the representations of preceptors and residents in three family and community medicine (FCM) residency programs in the state of Minas Gerais of the approach to child behavior problems and parental guidance. We conducted a qualitative study using in-depth semi-structured interviews. The material was coded and categorized based on the principles of thematic analysis proposed by Braun and Clarke. The interviewees recognized that child behavior problems are frequent and use various assessment and management procedures. However, they also manifested uncertainty with regard to diagnosing behavior and wished to receive guidance to help them differentiate between normal child behavior and disorders. The findings reinforce the need for further research and highlight the importance of including the discussion of this topic on the curriculum of FCM residency programs.
