Abstract

This article describes teaching-service integration efforts in response to prenatal, labor, childbirth and postpartum care needs within Brazilian National Health System (SUS). We conducted a descriptive exploratory study drawing on a documentary analysis of state permanent health education plans (2018–2020) and the results of a structured questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with representatives of permanent teaching-service integration commissions (CIESs) and women’s health services. The results reveal weaknesses in perinatal care initiatives, a disconnect between CIESs and educational institutions, and difficulties faced by state health departments in emphasizing the relevance and ensuring the sustainability of these commissions. It is concluded that strengthening CIESs, bringing them closer to universities and addressing institutional challenges are key strategies for improving the quality of perinatal care and reducing maternal and infant mortality within the SUS.
