Abstract
We conducted a qualitative socio-anthropological study with the aim of understanding resignifications of paternity in the face of the loss of a child. Online interviews were conducted with seven men. We performed an analysis of the data using the interpretation of meanings method, resulting in the identification of the following categories: representations of paternity; the experience of grieving; and resignifications of paternity. The results revealed the following: 1) that many paternal representations alluded to the process of becoming a father and dedication to children; 2) the particularities of paternal grieving, highlighting the process of saying goodbye and the effects of social support; 3) that resignifications encompassed a range of aspects from personal change to public mobilization initiatives. Cultural norms of masculinity result in the social invisibilization of paternal grieving. Given the current lack of research on this topic in the field of public health, this study seeks to make contributions to the care of bereaved parents.
