Abstract
This study investigated cultural representations (CRs) of integrative and complementary health practices (ICHPs) among coordinators of primary care centers (PCCs) in 18 municipalities in the metropolitan regions of Campinas, Fortaleza, Goiânia and Porto Alegre. Using a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted and thematic content analysis was performed. The findings showed that the provision of ICHPs in PCCs and specific training for coordinators were associated with positive CRs, such as: enhanced patient care and autonomy; health promotion and disease prevention; ICHPs as a complement to conventional treatment; and therapeutic support. In contrast, a lack of training and experience with ICHPs resulted in CRs that are indicative of uncertainty and imprecision. It was concluded that permanent training for managers in ICHPS is essential, given that CRs are linked to the implementation of the National Policy on Integrative and Complementary Practices in Primary Health Care.
