Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze dental surgeons’ understandings of the strengths and weaknesses of interprofessional work. We conducted a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with 33 dental surgeons working in the Family Health Strategy in a metropolitan municipality in the Northeast of Brazil. The data were analyzed using content analysisa as proposed by Bardin. The results show that most of the interviewees understood what interprofessional work is, highlighting the following strengths: comprehensive care; sharing of information; interest of professionals in teamwork. The following difficulties were reported: isolated work, lack of management support; and detachment from interprofessional training. The importance of interprofessional work was experienced during the coronavirus pandemic, with dentists participating in activities alongside other professionals, despite losses in dental clinics.
