It was sought to analyze the main challenges and perspectives of educational practices relating to food and nutritional security, from the experience of the Family Health Strategy in João Pessoa. An exploratory case study of qualitative nature was conducted, involving consultation of documents, semi-structured interviews and local observation. It was concluded that despite advances in relation to the dynamics of expansion and consolidation of the Family Health Strategy in this municipality, major challenges remain with regard to introduction of food and nutritional security approaches into local educational practices. Contextual variables such as low levels of qualification within the teams, high turnover among the professionals and weakness of integration between healthcare services and communities emerged as issues to be overcome.
