Abstract

The article draws on the paradox of presence and disappearance to address compositions in which images shape initiatives of memory and testimony. Drawing on the thinking of French art critic Georges Didi-Huberman, are the author addresses particularities of records of testimony and the work of elaboration around images. Exploring experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil and drawing on the thinking of Brazilian literary critic Edimilson de Almeida Pereira, the author goes on to address the challenges that this event posed to the tasks of imagination and memory, adopting a slant on the representation of history that rejects synthesis and a happy ending, and questioning, in the manner of the film “Retratos Fantasmas”, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, processes of erasure and their effects.
