Abstract

The National Policy for Comprehensive Men’s Health Care has shown itself to be incapable of meeting the specific needs of trans men, especially when it comes to reproductive health and parenting. This qualitative study investigated the limitations of the current policy, problematizing gender, masculinity and parenting. We highlight three core themes based on the participants’ comments and observations: Gender, sex and sexuality – fusions that circumvent the parenting construct; Constructing parenting and parental recognition; and Stigmatization and exclusion. It is concluded that there is an urgent need for continuous health education and awareness raising regarding parenting policies and the National Policy for Comprehensive Men’s Health Care, and among health professionals. It is crucial to recognize and support a variety of family structures and parenting experiences, including those of trans parents.
